Chapter Fourteen

the drop

...Madeline sped up, caught the car and waved her arm as she honked the horn but neither Gigi, or Sandy looked in Madeline’s direction, seeming to be busy laughing.

“Damn, I told you it was her and the bitch saw us,” she exclaimed to Gigi.

“I’ve got to play her, so when I raise the window down, you can keep looking straight cause you’re driving and she won’t think anything. If necessary I’ll get out of the car and talk to her. Now don’t let her see your face, Gigi,” Sandy instructed.

Sandy looked over in Madeline’s direction pretending as if she had just seen her and waved as she let the passenger’s window down.

“Girl, what are you doing way over here? How’d you like the party the other night?” Madeline asked.

“It was cool, but I’m so busy right now, I can’t think straight. I’m on my way to the skating rink over on Havenhurst and got lost,” Sandy answered quickly.

“Oh, make a left at the next light and it’s about two blocks down. Will you be over here long, maybe we can have a drink later,” Madeline offered.

“Where are you headed?” Sandy asked.

“Oh, I’m on a mission. I have to go and drop something off. I might come by the rink afterwards,” she answered, as she drove on.

“OK, bye!” Sandy said, slumping down in the seat.

“Damn that was close, she nearly peeped everything. We were lucky,” she confessed, as she chuckled.

“Now that she might notice the car, we’ve got to park somewhere else and walk over to her,” Sandy surmised.

When they pulled up to Sherman Way, they parked at the Mobil gas station.

“The Petersen Aviation building is only one block up on Valjean. When you see her, walk up on the broad and say, ‘don’t look around or you’ll be shot’, then ask for the money and give her the pictures. Once the money is in your hand, back off and hurry back to the car. The passenger’s door will be open, the car running and I’ll be ready,” Sandy instructed.

Gigi took a deep breath and said, “Here goes.”

As she prepared to walk off Maxwell and his crew rode by, making the left turn off Sherman Way, on to Valjean and drove on. Madeline didn’t pay any attention to them, but they saw that she was parked on the streets in front of the building.

Maxwell drove by looking straight ahead and after getting about two blocks down he made a U-turn, pulled over and parked. Isadore, one of his boys put the rifle on the back of the seat to steady his aim.

“Now fool, when the huzzy gets out of the car, pop her ass. Make sure she ain’t near KeviKev’s wife when you shoot. If you hit her, I’m shooting you in the arm,” Maxwell threatened.

“Maxi, don’t shoot me in the same arm you shot me in before. You already shot me in it twice,” he complained.

It was 4:30 p.m. as Gigi hurried towards the Petersen Building on her way to meet Madeline.
